What Is the Nd:YAG Laser?
Nd:YAG stands for neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet — the crystal that produces the laser's 1064 nm wavelength. That wavelength reaches deeper into the skin than visible-spectrum lasers, bypasses surface melanin almost entirely, and is selectively absorbed by hemoglobin in blood vessels and by deeper pigment. The result is a laser that can treat vascular and pigmentary concerns without overheating the surface — making it dramatically safer for darker skin tones than older alexandrite or diode platforms.

Why Nd:YAG Is Special for Darker Skin
Many older laser platforms — including diode and alexandrite hair-removal lasers, and pulsed-dye lasers — are partially absorbed by melanin in the skin's surface layer. That can produce burns, pigment loss, or hyperpigmentation in patients with darker skin tones. The Nd:YAG's 1064 nm wavelength interacts much less with surface melanin, which is why it is considered the gold standard for laser hair removal and many other treatments in Fitzpatrick types IV through VI.

What to Expect From Treatment

Most treatments take 15 to 45 minutes depending on the area being treated. Mild redness or transient swelling around treated vessels typically resolves within hours to a few days. Strict sun protection during and after a treatment series is essential.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
Vascular and pigment treatments often require 2 to 4 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Laser hair removal typically requires 6 to 8 sessions spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart, followed by occasional maintenance. We discuss expected timelines transparently at your consultation.
Is Nd:YAG Safe?
When used by an experienced dermatologic team, Nd:YAG is one of the safest and most versatile cosmetic lasers available. We carefully match settings to your skin type, the depth of the target, and the area being treated. Side effects are typically limited to transient redness and mild swelling.
Am I a Candidate?
Most adults are candidates for Nd:YAG treatments. We screen carefully for active infection, certain medications that increase photosensitivity, and pregnancy. Patients with very recent sun exposure or tan may be asked to wait until the tan fades.
